Agentive Metaphors, The Selfish Gene and Puritanism about Teleological Concepts

Agentive Metaphors, The Selfish Gene and Puritanism about Teleological Concepts

Introduction:
Speaking metaphorically is a janus-faced speech act. Its use recommends itself because a good or apt metaphor can be, in one familiar sense, a source of unexpected insight and it is, as Thomas Hobbes pointed out, a lust of the mind to come to understanding-seeking knowledge, a lust he famously compared with ‘the short vehemence of carnal pleasure’ (see Gopnik 1998 for an exploration of the distinctive phenomenology of explanation). Their use is therefore also hard to resist. But in another sense, their use is essentially contestable because potentially misleading when an unintended reader or audience, or even the intended reader or author herself, does not always appreciate the cognitive consequences of speaking metaphorically. The case is worsened when literal and metaphorical use of words and concepts are mixed up in one complex explanatory narrative. A perspective or way of seeing things that offers insight may thus unintentionally result in a massive, persistent and glaring ‘un-insight’. The lust of the mind to come to understand things and to explain has a cognitive price.

What Does it Take to be a Successful Manager?

What Does it Take to be a Successful Manager?

It's Black Friday, one of the busiest days for most businesses. There are people everywhere in the store. The lines are long and people are either gleaming with Christmas joy or impatiently waiting to hurry up and check out to move on to the next store. All these customers don't even stop to realize how much preparation and cleaning up is involved in this one day. There is shipment to be processed, advertisements to be made, signage to go up, and even scheduling of the right people. So many things have to be done for this big day and it is up to one person or sometimes a team of people, these people are called managers. All managers must have various traits to be successful, but the most important three are; leadership skills, problem solving skills, and honesty.

The Fraud Triangle

The Fraud Triangle

Abstract
The fraud triangle was developed in the 1950s. It has been used for many years to help auditors with assessing fraud risk during an audit. However, with corporations changing so much since the 1950s, is the fraud triangle still relevent, or should more elements be included? This paper will explain what the fraud triangle is, why some experts no longer believe the elements are enough, and what elements these experts believe should be added to help auditors assess fraud risk in the modern corporation.

Introduction
Have you ever heard of someone committing a fraud within their company and found yourself wondering what would lead someone to commit fraud? The fraud triangle gives some insight to possible answers to this question. This paper explains the three factors that increase the likelihood of fraud being committed, known as the fraud triangle, and also discusses the new components that experts believe should be incorporated into the assessment of the risk of fraud.

Racial Profiling: Separating America

Racial Profiling: Separating America

In the past 65 years our country has gone through many changes. We have ended segregation between minorities and Whites. We have even elected an African American president. We have supported several African American Secretaries of State. However, our law enforcement still believes it is ok to judge a person by the color of his or her skin. What gives a police officer the right to pull over an African American based on what he is driving? Also having the idea that he is probably doing something illegal? Jesse Jackson calls this “Driving while Black, (DWB)” (Nelson, Paul, Block Jr. & Brown-Dean). Another issue is the preferred drugs of different races are being used against minorities because of harsher penalty for the same offense. Racial profiling should never be used. In this paper I will address the issues of harsher drug charges, “Driving while Black,” and carrying concealed weapons without a license.

The Origin of the Roaring Twenties

The Origin of the Roaring Twenties

The 1920s was the most unique and exciting era the country has ever been through. America just came out of World War I and was basically unscathed, giving way to this exciting new era. Radical changes in American culture and lifestyles defined the time period. The lifestyle was so fast-paced and prominent during this time that it gave the time period the name of the Roaring Twenties. This lifestyle was only created by the economic conditions and advancements in entertainment and art.

Most Americans were doing fairly well financially, leading to a large middle class during the 1920s. Because people were stable financially, they spent more money and bought more things. At the same time, technology was rapidly advancing. Since everyone was able to own new devices, life was made easier. Cars, electricity, and radios also made life more exciting, as new things usually do. With more money, it was no longer a luxury to go to the movies or dancing at the club, usual pastimes of the era. Stable economic conditions made the Roaring Twenties possible.

Choosing a Career: Dental Assisting

Choosing a Career: Dental Assisting

My dream career is being a dental assistant. Dental assistants work with the public, which means that they are always helping people. Without dental assistants then people would have rotting and decaying teeth. The dental assistant has many tasks that they have to do in one day. Some of the tasks that they have to do are hard and some of the tasks are easy. But it all depends on what kind of assistant they are. There are three types of assistant’s secretary, rotating, and clinical all of these assistants do different things.

Performance Enhancing Drugs - The Pros and Cons of Steriods

Performance Enhancing Drugs - The Pros and Cons of Steriods

They were introduced to people as a medicine to help cure hypogonadism. This is a condition which causes insufficient testosterone. These are the famous performance enhancing drugs or as we all are familiar with, steroids. Since early years until this present day, there have been many arguments debating over several issues in our society such as abortion, death penalty, adoption, or even religion. Today, sports and drug use are among the most controversial topics and make for a great headliner. According to David Robinson, opponents argue that people who consume PED’s are “cheaters who gain an unfair advantage” while drug supporters think that “…with pro sport increasing its grasp on society, coupled with the pressures placed on athletes to win at all costs, steroids are here to stay.” So should performance enhancing drugs be allowed in sports?

The Use of iPads in College

The Use of iPads in College

Most students entering college understand today's technologies through everyday use. They are often referred to as the Net Generation and digital natives (Gawelete, Spataro, Komarny 28). Colleges are changing to a more mobile way of teaching, and Apples iPad has changed the way we learn. The use of an iPad increases learning in a college environment with making data more accessible, cutting cost of school supplies, and offers a more interactive way of learning.

In August 2010, Oklahoma State University and Arizona State University conducted a pilot program where they replaced printed handouts and readings with the iPad. The students felt that it had a positive impact on learning, and believe it will be a better replacement for printed course materials. Students at Oklahoma State University were able to purchase two digital text books for the price of a single printed text book (“Schools” 60). The iPad could lead to cost savings for the school with less use of paper, and decrease cost for students with the use of e-texts and digital textbooks, and learn in a more interactive way.

Discussing Saki and his Writing Styles as seen in the Short Stories Filboid Studge, the Story of a Mouse That Helped and The Interlopers

Saki, the author of the short stories Filboid Studge, the Story of a Mouse That Helped and The Interlopers, uses many different ways to portray the same ideas. Saki’s short stories have many similarities in their theme and writing styles. For example, Saki is known for torturing his characters, ending the story with an ironic twist that not many readers expect. He also uses different literary terms to show his different ideas about life. In these two short stories, Saki uses irony, imagery, and different settings and moods for each one. Though they are different, Saki’s intent and purpose is similar.

Overweight and Obesity - A Global Epidemic

Overweight and Obesity - A Global Epidemic

Being overweight and obese is a growing problem globally. According to the World Health Organization, the definition of the term overweight is an individual who has a Body Mass Index (BMI) exceeding 25. Obesity has three classes, but it all begins with a BMI exceeding 30, with the highest class, class III, a BMI of 40 or more (Flegal, 1999). Grundy et al. (1999) estimate that the rate of obese adults in the United States today is approximately 55% and steadily increasing. They also have evidence that trends show that the increasing rates are found in both genders and all racial groups, although the increase is more predominant in non-Hispanic black women, Mexican American women or men, and in individuals with lower education and household incomes (1999).

A Heroine in the Structure of Life - An Essay on Biophysicist Rosalind Franklin

In the year 1920 on the 25th of April science met one of its most prominent minds. Rosalind Franklin was born in Notting Hill London to a baker and was one of five children. In an age where the education of women was not considered necessary, she had a ready mind, so her parents sent her to one of the few girls schools in London; St. Paul's Girls School, where she quickly showed promise in science, Latin, and sports. It was during her time at the Girls School that she decided she would be a scientist. After the start of WWII the Franklin family helped to hide refuge Jews from Nazi’s in their home, all her life Rosalind was raised to understand the importance of life. After finishing her education at St. Paul's Girls School she went on to Newnham College where she finished her undergraduate in 1941, in 1945 she completed her doctorate at Cambridge University (Biography.com).

Brand Management after Merger and Acquisition of Second-Line National Brands

Brand Management after Merger and Acquisition of Second-Line National Brands

Abstract: In recent years, more and more national brands join the team of mergers and acquisitions (M&A). Among those brands, there are first-line national brands like Lenovo, and there are second-line national brands such as Foshan Lighting and Panda. It is especially easier for those second-line national brands, which have certain brand awareness and reputation in domestic market yet not strong enough to take a stable market share, to be kicked out of the market after M&A. This research analyzes the characteristics of second-line national brands, studies the reasons and problems of M&A of second-line national brands, and then tries to suggest strategies to manage the brand portfolio after M&A in the perspective of the acquiring parties.

To What Extent Have China's Recent Policies with Taiwan Promoted Better Cross-Strait Relations?

To What Extent Have China's Recent Policies with Taiwan Promoted Better Cross-Strait Relations?

Introduction
Relations across the Taiwan Straits have been unprecedentedly peaceful since KMT returned to power in 2008. The consistent stance of anti-independence of both the KMT and the CCP has allowed more avenues of dialogues and openness across the straits. Therefore, China is now extending more friendliness towards this renegade state to prevent Taiwan from separating from the mainland. China’s recent soft policies towards Taiwan have been successful in promoting peaceful cross-strait relations as there are now more communication and interaction between them on the social, cultural and economic levels. However, the extent of success can be improved in the long term with more interaction and more freedom from China on the political scale, which is primarily the fundamental core of the problems.

Bubble Formation and Endothelial Function Before and After Three Months of Dive Training

Bubble Formation and Endothelial Function Before and After Three Months of Dive Training

Poor decompression following diving leads to bubble formation in tissues and blood vessels which causes decompression sickness (DCS). Bubbles have been clearly shown to be the root cause of DCS, but often these “silent bubbles” go undetected. It has been shown that repeated diving exposures decrease the susceptibility to bubble formation. A single bout of physical activity prior to a dive has been shown to decrease detection of bubbles via Doppler system. It is possible that the endothelial function of the individual has improved with repeated diving therefore releasing a greater amount of Nitric Oxide (NO). Since a single dive inflames the endothelium, it is possible that dive training will adapt the endothelium and increase NO production. The aim of this research was to see if dive training will decrease bubble formation and enhance endothelial function.

Comparative Essay on the Characters Nick Bottom and Puck from William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream

Comparative Essay on the Characters Nick Bottom and Puck from William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream

In William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, two of the most important characters by the name of Nick Bottom and Puck have many things in common such as their light-hearted nature and the way they behave throughout. However, they also have their differences. Puck is known to be a fairy, considered to be of a higher status whereas Bottom is a craftsman, by no means greater than the Athenian citizens. While Puck is responsible for all the mischief and deception throughout the entire play, Bottom ironically, was the one who was turned into an ass by Puck. Although they seem to be so similar yet contradict each other, they have given the audience a complete fresh view about the surreal world of dreams and visions.

Bottom’s soliloquy and Puck’s monologue are both similar in the fact that both speeches include images of sleeping, dreaming and visions.
Bottom: “God’s my life! Stolen hence, and left me asleep! I have had a most rare vision. I have had a dream.” IV, i, 203-205

Terrible Consequences - A Paper on Terrorism, Harmony and God

Terrible Consequences - A Paper on Terrorism, Harmony and God

Terror is and always will be a part of life for man. Because of sin it is inescapable and unending. The act of terrorism is just an extension of the most fallen parts of mans nature. Since terror is an especially prominent issue in today’s culture, man should try and grasp what exactly it is so he can better understand and prevent it. The state of terror is one of fear and anguish, and while it is such an actuality Locke says in Second Treatise of Government that men, in their natural state must first protect themselves and then others; so when part of mankind forsakes this, other men must take it upon themselves go back and rediscover the mores in their state of nature (Locke 7-8). Although what motivates terror is an extension of sin and cannot be destroyed on this earth, man should fight it as well as is possible, because in order to be in harmony with his nature he must protect his fellow man; to his best abilities, against harm.

Exploiting the Art, Science and Creative Side of Effective Teaching - Group Activity Discussion

Activities that are creative as well as effective are becoming a necessity within the education world. As a group, we are planning an activity that not only exploits the “art” and the “science”, but also the creative side of effective teaching. Because our entire existence now is base on technology, it is evident that it is the most modern venue for teaching. But how do you teach something as rudimentary as reading, or as complex as advanced arithmetic using modern technology to make it fun and challenging to all involved? It is in our highest hopes that our activity will answer all of these questions.

Mysticism in Chan Buddhism – Kant, Synthetic Logic and William James

Abstract
This paper is about Chan Buddhism and mysticism. I would like to study a koan called “Juzhi Raises a Finger” in order to understand the mysticism in Chan Buddhism. Firstly, I would talk about Kant’s concept – Thing in itself and Chan Buddhism, then discuss the similarity of their understanding on “reality”. Secondly, I would talk about synthetic logic and mysticism in Chan Buddhism. At the end of this paper, I would discuss William James theory on this koan.

First of all, I would like to introduce Chan Buddhism briefly so that we can have a basic understanding on it. Chan Buddhism is one of the schools in Buddhism. It began in China. In Chinese word, we call it ‘Chan’. In Japanese word is ‘Zen’. It is important for us to know what the difference between traditional Buddhism and Chan Buddhism is. Bodhidharma was the founder of Chan Buddhism and brought Buddhism from India to China in the early 5th century. We can see what the Bodhidharma said to comprehend the characteristics of Chan Buddhism.

Message Atomicity over Scalable Reliable Multicast

Message Atomicity over Scalable Reliable Multicast

1. Introduction
Multicast, while an efficient way to deliver messages to a large number of hosts, has several drawbacks in that the size and scale of the number of participating machines often inhibits the possibility of message semantics. In basic multicast, there are no message semantics. Computers that receive multicast messages typically do not ACK the sender’s message -- this avoids the ensuing ’ACK implosion’ when there are many machines present and many messages being sent. As the network grows crowded, packet delivery becomes more unreliable and it useful to have some guarantee or some sort of semantics from which to glean information about packet receipt. Other systems in the past have, controversially, attempted to accomplish the same thing [1,2,3]. We attempted to merely add an atomicity guarantee and we choose to implement this over an existing base layer of network functionality. This is where SRM and our layer comes in.
