The Strange Addiction of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

The Strange Addiction of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

The thing or someone that people think about all the time, talk about all the time, and can even dream about all the time is called addiction. Addiction is what people do think about that makes their life not boring. It gives them motivation to do something, but can lead to trade-offs in their life. They will start spending more time doing that addiction than doing the things they liked to do, having withdrawals, and a higher amount of usage in that addiction according to The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM IV) . In Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Dr. Jekyll makes a potion that releases his bad side and he feels much more free and alive as Mr. Hyde. With this experiment, Dr. Jekyll experiences these signs of addiction.

As Dr. Jekyll runs around as Mr. Hyde, he sees his friends a lot less as Dr. Jekyll and sees them when he is Mr. Hyde. Mr. Utterson goes on about he and Dr. Layon are the two oldest friends of Dr. Jekyll and Layon replies, “I wish friends were younger,” chuckled Dr. Layon. “But I suppose we are. And what of that? I see little if him now.”(10). Dr. Jekyll hasn’t talked or even sent his friends mail because of this addiction of being Mr. Hyde. He also worried his servants about what he has been doing. Poole explains to Mr. Utrerson about the person in Dr. Jekyll’s lab, “…eight days ago, when we heard him cry out upon the name of God…” (41). From this, Dr. Jekyll’s servants don’t know what their master is up to. As Dr. Jekyll realizes this sign of his experiment, he tries to get rid of his addiction.

Withdrawal of an addiction makes the person want to go back to their addiction when they have given it up. Dr. Jekyll realizes how bad Mr. Hyde is and gives up trying to turn back into him. He starts having small parties with his friends and spending more time doing what he likes to do. Then his withdrawals start up and he starts to become Mr. Hyde again. As Mr. Utterson and his friend, Mr. Enfeild, are on their morning walk, they see Dr. Jekyll at his window. They started talking to him, but then “… the smile was struck out of his face and succeeded by an expression of such abject terror and despair, as froze the very blood of the two gentlemen below.” (36). This emotion that stuck his face was Mr. Hyde trying to control Dr. Jekyll and have him turn into Mr. Hyde. Dr. Jekyll doesn’t become Mr. Hyde right at the window is from him resisting Mr. Hyde to come out. He doesn’t have full control of his addiction. “For two months, however, I was true to my determination; for two months, I led a life of each severity as I had never before attended to, and enjoyed the compensations of an approving conscience. But time began at last to obliterate the freshness of my alarm; the praises of conscience began to grow into a thing of course…”(71). The doctor knows that the dosage is not working, so he plans to up the usage.

Addiction makes a person want to take or do more of their addiction than before. Dr. Jekyll had to get rid of Mr. Hyde and have him stay away for longer periods at a time. The original potion that he made does prevent Mr. Hyde from coming back. So Dr, Jekyll would increase his usage to stop him from coming back. In Jekyll’s journal, he explains that it became harder and harder to control Hyde. He had to choose between his doctor “fathering”(70) insight his life and Hyde is the “son” interest of his life. So he decided to stay with his better side and in order to do than, Jekyll had to increases the dose than before to make Hyde hide. To make this continue, he needed more of the drug to make the concoction. Jekyll sent his servants to get this drug from his previous seller. Poole, the butler, explains “.. the master’s, that is-- to write his orders on a sheet of paper and throw it on the stair.” Poole also explains the papers orders. :Well sir, ay , and twice, and thrice in the same day, there have been orders and complains, and I have been flying to all the wholesale chemists in town.”(41) This is Jekyll having his hard time to control Hyde and not able to come out to do his own errands. He needs that drug or he dies with Hyde.

Dr. Jekyll had realized his addiction, but it was for the better for himself and his community. His addiction helped him to control his worse side, but came out to be uncontrollable. Addictions can be a good thing to occupy one’s self, but it could turn out to be bad to one’s self and others.
